Odisha: The Odisha government is planning to establish an all-women court soon, announced Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on Sunday. This announcement was made during the second foundation day celebration of Odisha Women in Media (OWM).

Parida explained that this special court will be completely managed by women, from judges to lawyers, clerks, and peshkars. The aim is to make it easier for women, especially survivors of crimes, to share their experiences openly.

Parida said, “A rape survivor can speak openly in such court without any hesitation or shame.”

This initiative is expected to be a significant step towards improving justice for women and creating a more supportive environment for them.

During her address, Parida also highlighted the ‘Shakti’ app launched by the state government. This app is designed to ensure the safety of women in Odisha.

Parida shared, “A rape survivor will no longer have to go through the ordeal of narrating what happened with her before the court. Instead, she can record her statement in the app which can be used in the court.”

This feature is expected to ease the traumatic process of recounting incidents in court and encourage more survivors to come forward.

Parida also urged OWM to support women aspiring to join the journalism field. She emphasized the need to help women who face financial difficulties in pursuing journalism careers. Parida encouraged OWM to consider initiatives for upskilling women journalists to empower them professionally.

The event also included the felicitation of journalists Sobha Surin and Sumitra Sahoo. Both were honored with the OWM Awards for their excellence in journalism and received a cash prize of Rs 5,000 each.

Additionally, the annual magazine of OWM, titled ‘Arohi,’ was officially released during the program.

Several dignitaries graced the occasion, including Mayor Sulochana Das, OWM president Kasturi Ray, vice-president Sharada Lahangir, and secretary Minati Singha.
