The allegations have sparked conversations about the toxic impact of unrealistic beauty standards and the darker layers of marital abuse in India.
The woman’s husband, a 28-year-old physical education teacher from Meerut, is allegedly obsessed with Bollywood actor Nora Fatehi. According to her police complaint, he forced her to spend three hours daily at the gym to achieve a physique resembling the actor.
What began under the guise of “fitness motivation” quickly escalated into coercion, body-shaming, and emotional abuse. She said her husband taunted her about her appearance, withholding food whenever she resisted the gruelling routine. At one point, he reportedly told her that his life was “ruined” because he could have married someone who looked like Nora Fatehi.
The couple married in March this year, with the woman’s family reportedly spending nearly Rs. 75 lakh on the ceremony, gifting a Mahindra Scorpio, jewellery, and cash. Despite this, her in-laws allegedly continued to press for additional dowry. The woman has accused them of layering financial demands on top of the constant emotional and physical harassment she endured.

The situation escalated when the woman became pregnant. According to her statement, her in-laws showed no joy at the news. Soon after, her husband allegedly gave her a pill without explaining its purpose. She later suffered health complications and was admitted to a hospital, where doctors confirmed a miscarriage. Shockingly, she later discovered that the medicine given by her husband was an abortion pill. Following the incident, her in-laws dropped her back at her parental home, and by July, she was denied re-entry into her marital home.
The woman has now approached the police, leading to the registration of an FIR against her husband and in-laws under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges relating to dowry harassment, intentional humiliation, and abortion without consent.
