Nora Fatehi faces controversy after song “Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke” from KD: The Devil drew backlash, prompting a fatwa by Muslim Personal Darul Ifta amid criticism over allegedly vulgar lyrics.

Nora Fatehi has been at the centre of controversy after the song “Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke” from the Kannada film KD: The Devil faced criticism for allegedly offensive and vulgar lyrics.

Following the online outcry, the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, issued a fatwa against Nora Fatehi. The move came after the Union government also protested the song, which features Sanjay Dutt.

The religious body told ANI that the song contains material they find “objectionable and against Islamic teachings.”

Chief Mufti Maulana Ebrahim Hussain issued the fatwa, objecting to what he described as the song’s “explicit and vulgar” imagery. In a statement to India Today, he said he considered such content haram and a gunah-e-kabira (a grave sin), and that participating in or promoting such material runs counter to religious principles.

A fatwa in Islam is a non-binding legal opinion on a specific issue issued by a qualified religious scholar, or mufti, and it cannot be legally enforced by the state.

On Wednesday, the Union government confirmed in the Lok Sabha that the song has been banned following complaints about its lyrics and visuals. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw made the announcement in response to a question from Samajwadi Party MP Anand Bhadouria.

Since its release, the song has attracted sustained criticism and demands for action against those involved. Complaints seeking an FIR and the removal of the song from circulation were filed, intensifying public debate just days before the matter reached Parliament.

The track was composed by Arjun Janya, with original Kannada lyrics by director Prem and a Hindi rendition by Raqueeb Alam. The song is sung by Mangli.

KD’s ensemble includes Dhruva Sarja, Sanjay Dutt, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Ramesh Aravind, Reeshma Nanaiah, and V Ravichandran. KD: The Devil is scheduled for release on April 30.
