Navjot Singh Sidhu, Wife Receive Rs 850 Crore Legal Notice Over ‘Special Diet’ Cancer Treatment Claims

Chhattisgarh: Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, has been served a legal notice worth Rs 850 crore by the Chhattisgarh Civil Society (CCS). The notice pertains to the “traditional” cancer recovery claims made by her husband, which have sparked controversy.

CCS has demanded an explanation from Kaur regarding the assertions made by Sidhu about her recovery from Stage 4 cancer through specific dietary interventions.

Controversial Claims by Navjot Singh Sidhu

Navjot Singh Sidhu, in a press interaction on November 21, made headlines when he described his wife’s battle with cancer. He revealed that doctors had predicted she had only 40 days to live.

According to Sidhu, his wife’s recovery was significantly influenced by a specialized diet that avoided certain foods.

Sidhu compared cancer to “inflammation,” stating-

“Cancer feeds on sugar, so the lifeline of cancer, ayurveda, American doctors, research in India, I read everything for 10 hours, and the common denominators, and then cutting sugar, atta, maida, aerated drinks, all of these gone. Samosa, jalebi gone,”

-as quoted by Media.

Sidhu claimed that avoiding items like milk, wheat (carbohydrates), refined wheat flour (maida), and sugar played a vital role in curbing cancerous growth.

Questions Raised by the Chhattisgarh Civil Society

The CCS, in its legal notice, questioned the authenticity of Sidhu’s statements and demanded clarification from Navjot Kaur Sidhu. The notice raised the following critical points:

  • Supporting Evidence:
Does Kaur endorse the claims made by her husband about her recovery?

  • Role of Allopathic Treatment:
Does she believe that the allopathic medicines she took had no impact on her recovery?

  • Dietary Practices vs. Medication:
Did her recovery stem solely from consuming dietary elements like neem leaves, lemon water, tulsi, and turmeric, or did she also rely on allopathic treatment?

The notice emphasized-

“It (Sidhu’s claims) has the potential to create negativity in people’s minds towards allopathic medicine and treatment. It is compelling even cancer patients to leave the medication in between, which has increased their life risks.”

Call for Evidence and Potential Consequences

The CCS has given Navjot Kaur a seven-day window to provide substantiating evidence for the claims made by her husband. Failing this, they have demanded compensation of Rs 850 crore, holding the couple accountable for allegedly spreading misinformation.

The notice further elaborated that such “false information” endangers the health of cancer patients and might discourage them from pursuing essential allopathic treatments.

The CCS stated their intent to proceed with legal action unless Kaur clarifies her position and provides proof to back her husband’s claims.

The Broader Implications

This development has triggered a debate on the balance between alternative and conventional treatments for critical illnesses like cancer. While holistic approaches can complement medical care, unverified claims might lead patients to make dangerous decisions.

The outcome of this case could set a significant precedent in addressing the accountability of public figures making health-related statements.
