In Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, a Muslim man and his pregnant Hindu wife were attacked by lawyers while attempting to register their marriage. Police have filed a case against the assailants.

Rewa, Madhya Pradesh: A Muslim man and his 21-year-old pregnant Hindu wife were attacked at a court in Rewa district by a group of unidentified lawyers while they were trying to get their marriage registered. The police have filed a case against the attackers, an official confirmed on Saturday.
Videos of the shocking incident, which took place on Friday, surfaced online, showing a police officer escorting the couple to safety amid the attack.
The woman, who is three months pregnant, revealed that she had married Rajib Khan under Islamic rituals on June 28, 2023. She questioned the attack, stating:
“On Friday, a mob pushed me to the ground twice on the court premises. The town police inspector saved our life by taking us to safety in his four-wheeler. I don’t know why these people are attacking us when my parents have no objection to our marriage.”
The woman shared that she had met Khan in 2021 after he mistakenly dialed her number. The two started talking and eventually fell in love.
“We are from different villages under the jurisdiction of the same police station,”
she added.
Khan explained that they had gone to the court complex on Friday as their lawyer required them to sign documents for their marriage registration. However, they were attacked inside their lawyer’s chamber.

“I was beaten up by a group of lawyers inside my lawyer’s chamber. I sustained wounds and have taken a painkiller. The group abused us and cursed my wife, saying she should die.”
Fortunately, Advocate Sharda Singh and some other friends helped them escape.
After the attack, the couple was taken to the police station, where their safety was ensured. Senior officials, including Acting Inspector General of Rewa Zone Saket Pandey, confirmed that a case was registered against unidentified persons based on Khan’s complaint.

Civil Lines Station House Officer (SHO) Kamlesh Sahu provided further details, stating:
“The accused have been booked for assault, abuse, and issuing threats. The complaint was registered after we received Khan’s medico-legal certificate from the hospital.”
The police are currently investigating the incident, and further action will be taken against those responsible.
