Yesterday, On 31st August, Jamiat President Maulana Mahmood Madani urged the Chief Justice of India to take suo motu action against Assam Chief Minister’s remarks on ‘Miya Muslims.’ In a letter addressed to the CJI, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP President J.P. Nadda, Madani emphasized the series of unconstitutional comments made by the Assam CM.
New Delhi: Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind on Saturday appealed to Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud to take suo motu action in response to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s comments about ‘Miya Muslims,’ stating that these remarks amount to a “blatant betrayal of constitutional principles.”
Jamiat President Maulana Mahmood Madani sent a letter to Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP President J P Nadda, drawing attention to the “series of unconstitutional remarks” made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and urging immediate action, according to a statement from the prominent Muslim organization.
The statement added,
“The Jamiat chief expressed deep concern over Sarma’s recent ‘anti-Muslim’ remarks.”
Madani stressed that these remarks are not only deeply inappropriate but also represent a “blatant betrayal of constitutional principles.”
He urged the Chief Justice of India to take suo motu action to halt such divisive statements. Madani highlighted that the chief minister’s role, as outlined by the Constitution, requires impartiality and justice for all citizens.
The Jamiat statement noted,
“However, Chief Minister Sarma continues to disregard these fundamental responsibilities. “
In a recent assembly session, the chief minister brazenly declared,
“I will take a side; this is my ideology, I will not allow Miya Muslims to take over Assam,”
These “inflammatory statements” have come at a time when more than “thirty groups of miscreants” in Upper Assam have allegedly threatened Bengali Muslims to leave the region, the Jamiat claimed. Madani emphasized that in such sensitive times, the chief minister should focus on promoting communal harmony rather than emboldening such miscreants with divisive rhetoric. He warned that Sarma’s statements are likely to worsen social unrest and deepen existing ethnic and religious divides in Assam.
Furthermore, Madani pointed out that by using “Miya” in a derogatory manner to refer to a linguistic and religious minority, the chief minister is attempting to reduce them to second-class citizens.

He also criticized Sarma for making baseless claims that Assam will become a Muslim-majority state by 2041 and for labelling any dissent as “jihad,” saying the chief minister is “spreading hatred and communal venom,” according to the Jamiat. In his letter, Madani referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s commitment at the start of his third term, when he declared that the Constitution would be the guiding principle.
Sarma, during his speech in the assembly on the admissibility of adjournment motions raised by opposition parties concerning the law and order situation following the gangrape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon, asserted his intent to take sides and declared he would not let ‘Miya’ Muslims “take over” Assam.
