Progressive Law or Political Weapon?: Meghwal Defends 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, Slams Kejriwal for Not Resigning While Jailed

NEW DELHI: Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, on Saturday (August 23, 2025), strongly defended the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, describing it as a “progressive legislation” aimed at strengthening governance and accountability. He questioned whether the Opposition was siding with corruption by criticising the Bill.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Meghwal cited the example of AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, pointing out that he did not resign as Delhi Chief Minister even while incarcerated.

“In my view, this is an excellent and progressive law. The Opposition should support it, but they are opposing. Is the Opposition in favour of corruption?”

he asked.

The Controversial Bill:

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently introduced three significant Bills in the Lok Sabha:

  • The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025
  • The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025
  • The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025

These Bills seek to remove the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Ministers arrested on serious criminal charges for 30 days. While the government has defended the move as a step towards cleaner politics, the Opposition has raised concerns about potential misuse.

Responding to apprehensions regarding misuse of the legislation, Mr. Meghwal said that the Opposition had not read the details of the Bill properly. He insisted that the provisions were designed to safeguard democratic accountability and restore public faith in leadership.

During his address, Mr. Meghwal also highlighted the recent success of ‘Operation Sindoor’, crediting the armed forces for their valour. He claimed that India’s honour had increased significantly due to the bravery displayed during the operation, which was discussed extensively in the monsoon session of Parliament.

Apart from political discussions, the Minister participated in a tree plantation drive under the campaign “One Tree in Mother’s Name for My Indore” in Indore, India’s cleanest city. After planting a Sindoor sapling, Mr. Meghwal remarked,

“Trees are like ornaments of Mother Earth, and to keep them green, we must resolve to plant one tree in the name of our mother.”
