Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis announced a completed investigation and chargesheet in the Beed sarpanch murder case, expressing confidence in strict punishment for the guilty amid political controversy.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday stated that a thorough investigation has been conducted in the Beed sarpanch murder case, and a chargesheet has been filed. He expressed confidence that the guilty will receive exemplary punishment.
The Maharashtra Criminal Investigation Department (CID) filed a 1,200-page chargesheet in the Santosh Deshmukh murder case and two related cases in a Beed district court on Thursday.
Santosh Deshmukh, sarpanch of Massajog village, was abducted, tortured, and murdered on December 9, 2023, allegedly for trying to stop an extortion bid targeting an energy company in Beed. Seven people have been arrested, but the prime accused, Krushna Andhale, is still at large.
“The police have conducted a very professional investigation in the Santosh Deshmukh case. The chargesheet has been filed in a timely manner and with complete evidence following the new law. Now, we will request the court to fast track this case. We have appointed Ujjwal Nikam as special public prosecutor. I am confident the court will give strict punishment to the accused,”
CM Fadnavis said.
The case has sparked a political controversy, as NCP minister Dhananjay Munde’s close aide, Walmik Karad, was arrested in a related extortion case. The Opposition has demanded Munde’s resignation, but he has denied any involvement.
The Maharashtra government recently appointed renowned lawyer Ujjwal Nikam as the special public prosecutor to handle the case. CM Fadnavis made his statements during the Maharashtra police conference, where various law and order issues were discussed.
