LUCKNOW: In a decisive move to ease traffic congestion and reclaim public spaces, a joint team of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) and the police demolished illegal chambers built by lawyers on roads and footpaths near the old High Court in Kaiserbagh.
The campaign targeted encroachments stretching from the Health Building to the road leading to the Residency and Bakshi Didi Road. During the operation, over 40 tin-shed chambers were dismantled, all in the presence of an organization representing local lawyers.
Interestingly, it was the lawyers’ own association that had initially complained about the encroachments, urging the Municipal Corporation to take action. The association highlighted that the chambers obstructed traffic and created inconvenience for daily commuters.
More than two dozen senior lawyers were present on-site as the campaign unfolded. The demolition lasted approximately five hours, led by Zonal Officer OP Singh and Executive Engineer Kishori Lal of the LMC. The team, supported by a heavy police force, Municipal Corporation staff, and JCB machines, meticulously removed all the tin-shed chambers on one side of the road.
The Municipal Corporation has warned that more demolitions are planned for next week, as many illegal chambers still occupy roads and footpaths in the area. Notices have been issued to the remaining encroachers, signaling that the city administration is serious about reclaiming public spaces.
Officials stated that the ultimate goal is to completely free the roads from encroachments, providing relief to commuters who face daily traffic snarls on this busy route.
