Lawyers in Mathura District Announce Indefinite Strike Over Police Misconduct, Give Two-Day Ultimatum to Administration

MATHURA: Lawyers in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district have announced an indefinite strike starting Wednesday. The move comes in response to alleged injustice and repeated instances of alleged injustice and excesses by police, Bar Association secretary Shiv Kumar Lawania confirmed.

According to Lawania, the decision to halt legal work was unanimously taken on Tuesday during a meeting of senior members of the Bar Association. The district judge, district magistrate, senior superintendent of police (SSP), and all concerned courts were duly informed about the strike.

Lawania explained that despite multiple meetings with the SSP over deteriorating law and order and persistent complaints regarding police misbehavior with lawyers, no corrective measures had been implemented.

“We understand that such strikes cause inconvenience to litigants and society at large. But if the police administration addresses our grievances, we are ready to withdraw the strike,”

he added.

The Bar Association has given the administration two days to respond positively. If the authorities fail to take appropriate action, the lawyers have warned of intensifying their agitation through demonstrations and other forms of protest.

The strike is being observed by all lawyers practicing in civil, criminal, motor accident claims tribunal, and other courts within the district. Members of the Chhata Bar Association are also participating in the protest.

Lawania emphasized that the protest is not linked to a single incident. Instead, it reflects ongoing frustration over repeated complaints of mistreatment faced by advocates who visit police stations for legal work. Lawyers have alleged a lack of cooperation and hostile behavior by police officials, which they argue undermines the dignity of the legal profession.
