Prominent lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, nominated to Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu, recalled receiving a personal call from PM Modi, who warmly asked, “Should I speak in Hindi or Marathi?” during their conversation.
Prominent lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, one of four individuals nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu, shared on Sunday that Prime Minister Modi personally called him to deliver the news.
Ujjwal Nikam told reporters,
“Modi ji speaks excellent Marathi. He begins some of his speeches in Maharashtra in Marathi and then switches to Hindi,”

Nikam recounted,
“When I received his call and the operator connected me to him, the PM said, ‘Ujjwal ji mi Marathit bolu ka Hindi bolu (should I speak in Marathi or Hindi),’”
He added,
“I told him that he has command over both languages. He told me that the President wants to hand over some responsibility to me and if I would be willing to accept it,”

Nikam, who was unsuccessful in the Lok Sabha elections last year, mentioned that when he inquired about the nature of this responsibility, he learned it would involve a Rajya Sabha membership.
In a notification issued late Saturday night, the Union Home Ministry announced the nominations of former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Ujjwal Nikam, Kerala BJP leader C. Sadanandan Master, and historian Meenakshi Jain from Delhi to the Rajya Sabha.
