TMC slams Kesari Chapter 2 for misrepresenting Bengali freedom fighters and files FIR against producers. The film is under fire for changing names and facts linked to Bengal’s independence history.
West Bengal: Today, on June 19, Akshay Kumar’s latest historical drama Kesari Chapter 2 has found itself in legal trouble shortly after its release on the OTT platform JioHotstar. The film, which received positive feedback during its time in theatres, is now being criticised for allegedly misrepresenting Bengal’s role in India’s freedom struggle.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has strongly opposed certain portrayals in the film and has taken legal action.
The TMC has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against seven producers of Kesari Chapter 2 at the Bidhannagar South police station.
The charges have been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). According to the party, the film distorts history by changing the names and origins of well-known Bengali revolutionaries.
TMC leaders pointed out that the film wrongfully refers to Khudiram Bose as “Khudiram Singh”, and Barindra Kumar Ghosh as “Birendra Kumar” from Amritsar, instead of acknowledging his Bengali roots.
These changes have caused major outrage among party members and the public in Bengal, who view this as a deliberate attempt to erase the contributions of Bengali freedom fighters.
Senior TMC leaders Kunal Ghosh and Arup Chakraborty held a press conference to highlight the importance of Bengal’s role in India’s independence movement and strongly criticised the filmmakers.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also spoke out about the issue and said,
“There are attempts to undermine the role played by the Bengali revolutionaries during the independence struggle. We condemn this. The BJP has been targeting Bengal and our cultural heritage.”
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh added,
“The names of Bengali revolutionaries who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom were being distorted. This is not just a mistake, this is a conspiracy to erase Bengal’s role in the freedom movement. How did such a film get a censor certificate?”
He further claimed that the film had replaced another important historical figure, Hemchandra Kanungo—who was known for training young revolutionaries in bomb-making—with a fictional character named Kripal Singh.
The TMC believes this is a deliberate move to diminish Bengal’s contribution to the freedom struggle and to promote a biased version of history.
The party also raised serious concerns about how the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) allowed such historical inaccuracies to pass through the certification process.
They demanded strict action against those responsible and called for accountability from the authorities.
TMC raised a sharp question,
“Why didn’t the censor board flag these historical distortions? Who allowed such a film to pass certification?”
Directed by Karan Singh Tyagi, Kesari Chapter 2 features Akshay Kumar, R. Madhavan, and Ananya Panday in major roles.
