Karnataka Bar Council warns lawyers to remove derogatory promotional reels and videos uploaded on social media or face strict disciplinary action under the Advocates Act, 1961.

BENGALURU: The Karnataka State Bar Council (KSBC) has taken a strong move against the rising trend of derogatory statements and promotional content being circulated by advocates on social media. In a meeting held on 15th August 2025, at the KSBC premises in Bengaluru, the council deliberated on several complaints regarding videos, reels, and posts undermining the dignity of the judiciary and the legal fraternity.
Key Discussions
- Email from Advocate S. Basavaraj: The council reviewed concerns about reels circulating on social media that allegedly disrespected the field of law.
- Letter from Advocates Association, Harapanahalli: A request was made to initiate strict action against advocates indulging in activities that compromise the decorum of the legal profession, under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961.
- Letter from Advocate Trivikram S: The council considered his plea to restrain advocates from creating or sharing promotional videos that could amount to professional misconduct.

Resolution Passed
Through Resolution No. 50/2025, the KSBC directed:
- Advocates who have uploaded derogatory or promotional content on social media must immediately remove such posts, reels, or videos by 31st August 2025.
- Failure to comply will invite disciplinary proceedings under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961.
