Kapil Sibal criticized the Election Commission for allegedly favoring the ruling party, warning that this threatens India’s democracy and highlighting the lack of accountability in electoral processes.

NEW DELHI: Senior lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has strongly criticized the Election Commission (EC), alleging that it is “in the hands of the government.”

Speaking about the fairness of elections in India, Sibal expressed deep concern over the role of the Election Commission, suggesting that it is favoring the ruling party.

“Election Commission is in the hands of the government… If democracy continues like this and Election Commission keeps lobbying for the government, then the results that will definitely come are in front of you…”

he stated.

Sibal, who has often been vocal about issues related to democratic institutions, warned that if this pattern continues, India’s democracy will be reduced to a mere formality.

“If this system continues, then it is not democracy but a sham… We have been suspicious for many years…”

he added, raising doubts over the credibility of the election process.

The former Union Minister also hinted that the lack of accountability and transparency in electoral processes has been a long-standing issue.

Sibal further stressed that while many people are aware of what happens on the ground during elections, there is no mechanism in place to address these concerns.

“What happens on the ground is known to everyone but there is no one to listen…”

he remarked, questioning the lack of action despite repeated complaints.

His statements come at a time when India is gearing up for crucial elections, making the debate on the independence of the Election Commission more relevant than ever.
