New Delhi, March 26: Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma, who is under investigation after burnt cash was allegedly found at his home, met a team of senior lawyers on Wednesday. This meeting took place ahead of his scheduled appearance before an in-house inquiry committee set up by the Supreme Court.

According to sources, Justice Varma sought legal advice from senior advocates Siddharth Aggarwal, Maneka Guruswamy, Arundhati Katju, and advocate Tara Narula. These lawyers visited his official residence at Lutyens’ Delhi to discuss the legal aspects of the case and his response to the allegations.
A three-member in-house committee, appointed by the Supreme Court, has been tasked with investigating the allegations against Justice Varma. The committee is expected to meet him later this week. On Tuesday, the committee members visited his residence at 30, Tughlak Crescent, to start their inquiry. The committee spent nearly 45 minutes inspecting the room where the burnt currency notes were discovered.
According to sources, senior officers, including New Delhi DCP Devesh Kumar Malla, were present at the scene for approximately two hours. Based on the recommendations of the Supreme Court-appointed committee, the Delhi Police sealed the section of the house where the fire incident and the burnt notes were found.
Officials from the Delhi High Court, who were assisting the committee, were also present. The entire operation was “videographed for official records.”
The inquiry panel consists of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chief Justice G S Sandhawalia of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, and Justice Anu Sivaraman of the Karnataka High Court. The three judges stayed inside Justice Varma’s residence for about 30-35 minutes to examine the matter.
This high-profile inquiry will decide the future of Justice Varma, who is facing serious allegations. Reports claim that “four to five semi-burnt sacks of Indian currency notes” were discovered at his house following a fire on March 14. The allegations have raised questions about financial irregularities.
Following the allegations, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended that Justice Varma be sent back to his parent Allahabad High Court. Additionally, the Delhi High Court de-rostered him from judicial duties, following a directive issued by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna.
On March 22, the CJI constituted the three-member committee to investigate the case. The Supreme Court also decided to publish online the report prepared by Delhi High Court Chief Justice D K Upadhyay. This report contains photos and videos of the alleged cash found at Justice Varma’s residence.
