Today, On 21st December, Former Supreme Court judge Justice Madan Lokur has been appointed the Chairperson of the United Nations Internal Justice Council. This council helps improve the UN’s internal justice system by ensuring fairness and transparency in handling disputes. New Delhi: Former Supreme Court judge Madan B. Lokur has been appointed chairperson of the United Nations Internal Justice Council, with his term set to conclude on November 12, 2028.
In a message to Justice Lokur, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that the retired judge would lead the council, which includes other esteemed jurists.
The communication dated December 19 states,
“I have the pleasure to appoint you, with immediate effect, as a member of the Internal Justice Council, in the capacity of chairperson, for a term ending on 12 November 2028,”
The council also includes the following members (in alphabetical order): Ms. Carmen Artigas (Uruguay), distinguished external jurist nominated by staff; Ms. Rosalie Balkin (Australia), distinguished external jurist nominated by management; Mr. Stefan Brezina (Austria), staff representative; and Mr. Jay Pozenel (United States), management representative.
Justice Lokur, born in 1953, appointed to the Supreme Court on June 4, 2012, and retired on December 30, 2018, upon reaching the age of superannuation. In 2019, he became a judge on the Supreme Court as part of its non-resident panel, making him the first Indian judge to serve on the Supreme Court of another country.
Justice Madan Lokur, a former judge of the Supreme Court of India, is widely admired for his contributions to Indian law and justice. Throughout his judicial career, he emphasized human rights, social justice, and environmental issues.
