Justice Ashutosh Kumar has a distinguished academic and professional background. He completed his schooling at St. Michael’s High School in Patna. He later graduated from St. Stephen’s College under Delhi University and pursued an LL.B. degree at the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University. Justice Kumar began his legal career on July 9, 1991, when he enrolled as an advocate at the Patna High Court.

NEW DELHI: The Central Government has announced the appointment of Justice Ashutosh Kumar as the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. Justice Kumar will take over the responsibilities from Chief Justice KV Chandran, who is set to join the Supreme Court following his recent elevation, approved on January 13.

The official notification stated: “In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Ashutosh Kumar, Judge of the Patna High Court, to perform the duties of office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from the date Shri Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran relinquishes charge of his office consequent upon his elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.”

Justice Kumar’s judicial journey began with his appointment as an additional judge of the Patna High Court on May 15, 2014. He was subsequently transferred to the Delhi High Court, where he took his oath of office on January 7, 2015. Later, he was confirmed as a permanent judge of the Patna High Court on April 21, 2016. On November 21, 2017, he was transferred back to the Patna High Court.
