Justice Ashok Bhushan Reappointed as NCLAT Chairperson Till July 2026

NEW DELHI: The Central Government has re-appointed former Supreme Court Judge Justice Ashok Bhushan as the Chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT).

According to an official order issued on November 7, 2025, by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the Ministry of Corporate Affairs’ proposal for Justice Bhushan’s re-appointment.

He will now continue to serve as NCLAT Chairperson till he attains the age of 70 years on July 4, 2026.

Justice Ashok Bhushan

Born on July 5, 1956, in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, Justice Ashok Bhushan pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Arts in 1975 and obtained his Law degree from Allahabad University in 1979, securing First Division.

He enrolled with the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh on April 9, 1979, and began practising in civil and original matters before the Allahabad High Court. During his practice, he served as Standing Counsel for several major institutions, including:

  • Allahabad University
  • State Mineral Development Corporation Limited
  • Various municipal bodies, banks, and educational institutions

Justice Bhushan also held the position of Senior Vice-President of the Allahabad High Court Bar Association before his elevation to the bench.

The judicial journey of Justice Bhushan has been marked by several key appointments:

  • Permanent Judge, Allahabad High Court — April 24, 2001
  • Judge, Kerala High Court — July 10, 2014
  • Acting Chief Justice, Kerala High Court — August 1, 2014
  • Chief Justice, Kerala High Court — March 26, 2015
  • Judge, Supreme Court of India — May 13, 2016
  • Chairman, Ravi Beas River Tribunal — July 2020

He retired from the Supreme Court on July 4, 2021, after a distinguished tenure marked by judgments on key constitutional, administrative, and commercial law matters.
