The Centre has notified the appointment of Justice A Muhamed Mustaque as the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court following the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation. With his elevation, the Sikkim High Court will reach its full sanctioned strength of three judges.
The Central government has officially notified the appointment of Justice A Muhamed Mustaque, who is currently a judge of the Kerala High Court, as the new Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court.
This appointment comes after the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium, which is headed by the Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant. The Collegium took this decision during its meeting held on December 18.

Following this recommendation, the Central government issued the notification confirming Justice Mustaque’s elevation.
Justice A Muhamed Mustaque will take charge as the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court from the date he formally assumes office. At present, the High Court is being led by Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai, who is serving as the Acting Chief Justice.
Justice Mustaque was born on June 1, 1967, and hails from Kannur in Kerala. He completed his law degree from VB College of Law, Udupi, and later pursued his Master of Laws (LLM) in Labour Law from Mahatma Gandhi University.
After enrolling as an advocate in 1989, he began his legal practice and regularly appeared before various courts and statutory authorities, mainly in Kannur.
Over the years, Justice Mustaque has also gained international academic exposure. He undertook specialised courses in space and telecommunication law at Paris XI University, studied private international law at the Hague Academy, and completed courses in e-commerce and intellectual property at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
His judicial career began when he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Kerala High Court in 2014. He was made a Permanent Judge in 2016 and later served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court in 2024. His elevation to the position of Chief Justice now marks another significant milestone in his judicial journey.
The Sikkim High Court currently has only two judges, making it the smallest High Court in the country in terms of strength.
With the appointment of Justice A Muhamed Mustaque as Chief Justice, the working strength of the Sikkim High Court will increase to its full sanctioned strength of three judges, which is expected to further strengthen the functioning of the court and improve the administration of justice in the state.
