Today, On 6th November, The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed a resolution calling for dialogue on the restoration of Article 370. However, BJP members, including Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, opposed the motion, arguing that it was not part of the scheduled agenda. The resolution seeks to address concerns related to the revocation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

New Delhi: The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed a resolution urging the Centre to engage in talks with elected representatives regarding the restoration of Article 370, which grants special status to the Union Territory.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary introduced the resolution, calling for the reinstatement of the special status that was revoked by the Centre on August 5, 2019.

The resolution stated,

“This legislative assembly reaffirms the importance of the special status and constitutional guarantees, which safeguarded the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and expresses concern over their unilateral removal.”

It further emphasized that any process moving forward should balance national unity with the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

As soon as the resolution was introduced, BJP members, including Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, objected, stating that it was not part of the scheduled business.

He remarked,

“The Act was passed by the largest temple of democracy in the country (Parliament),”

This triggered an uproar from the treasury benches, with BJP members tearing copies of the resolution and throwing them into the Well of the House. Assembly marshals intervened to stop Langate MLA Sheikh Khursheed as he attempted to rush into the Well.

Amid the chaos, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather proceeded to put the resolution to a vote. The resolution relates to Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir before it was abrogated by the Modi-led government.

This move resulted in the bifurcation of the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
