Justice Surya Kant praised the Indian diaspora in the US, stating that their true strength lies in upholding India’s constitutional values. He said justice, fairness, and inclusivity bind Indians worldwide beyond traditions.
Washington DC: Today, on June 11, In a heartfelt and powerful keynote address delivered in Washington DC, Supreme Court of India’s Justice Surya Kant spoke about the deep connection between the Indian diaspora and their homeland,
while highlighting the judiciary’s important role in preserving India’s core values like justice, equality, and dignity.

Justice Surya Kant was speaking at a gathering hosted by the Washington Telangana Association.
Addressing a packed audience of Indian-origin families and professionals in Greater Seattle, he said that India’s judicial system plays a crucial part in keeping Indians united, both within the country and abroad.
He described how the Indian community living outside India stays connected not only through traditions and culture but also through the democratic institutions that shape the nation.
Justice Kant said,
“What you have built here is more than a network,”
praising the strong bonds within the diaspora community.
“It is a community, a family, and a powerful reminder that while we may be thousands of miles from India, the heart of India — our values, our warmth, our celebration of diversity — continues to thrive.”
Justice Kant acknowledged the major contributions made by the Indian diaspora in many sectors such as technology, healthcare, and education.
However, he pointed out that India’s true identity is found not just in cultural memories, but in the values enshrined in the Constitution.
“Tradition keeps us rooted in who we are, but it is the strength of India’s constitutional framework that safeguards the principles underpinning our identity—justice, fairness, and inclusivity.”
He dedicated a major portion of his speech to explaining how the Indian judiciary has become more inclusive and accessible to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
From legal matters like cross-border divorce and family property disputes to protecting the basic rights of NRIs, Indian courts have made consistent efforts to deliver justice across borders.

Justice Kant emphasized that the Indian judiciary understands the legal challenges faced by NRIs living in other countries and has adapted accordingly.
“For the diaspora, this becomes a source of pride and reassurance, affirming that the values they hold dear are not only protected, but continually reaffirmed within India’s constitutional order.”
Justice Surya Kant also spoke about the judiciary’s vital role in upholding national unity.
He explained that Indian courts do much more than just solve legal cases — they help strengthen India’s democratic foundation through fair judgments and moral guidance.
“The Indian judiciary plays a unifying role in sustaining the diverse and democratic character of the nation. Through its reasoned decisions and moral authority, the judiciary not only resolves legal conflicts but also affirms a vision of justice that binds the nation together.”
He ended his speech by calling on members of the diaspora to act as proud ambassadors of India’s cultural richness and constitutional values.
He encouraged them to carry forward India’s inclusive and democratic spirit across the world.
“Let us continue to be rooted yet forward-looking, proud yet inclusive, committed to building bridges across communities and generations.”
