President Droupadi Murmu will address members of both Houses of Parliament in the Central Hall on Constitution Day, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also participating. The celebration at the Supreme Court’s Auditorium will feature PM Modi releasing the Indian Judiciary’s 2023-24 annual report and addressing the gathering.

The Constituent Assembly convened for the first time on December 9, 1946, in the Central Hall of the old Parliament House, New Delhi. According to the Lok Sabha website, the chamber was elegantly decorated, featuring bright lamps hanging from high ceilings and walls. Members sat in semi-circular rows facing the Presidential dais, with notable figures like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Acharya J.B. Kripalani in the front row.

Union Culture Secretary Arunish Chawla highlighted the importance of this milestone, describing it as an opportunity to deepen public awareness of the Constitution’s visionary scope and dynamic nature. Special initiatives include a commemorative booklet and an exhibition showcasing the Constitution’s calligraphic art.

The main celebration will take place in the Central Hall of the old Parliament building, with President Droupadi Murmu presiding and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the guest of honor.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will also attend the event. Highlights include the release of a commemorative coin and stamp and the launch of two books: “Making of the Constitution of India: A Glimpse” and “Making of the Constitution of India & Its Glorious Journey.” Additionally, the Constitution will be released in Sanskrit and Maithili, and a short film on its history will be screened.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju addressed the media, emphasizing the significance of celebrating in the historic chamber where the Constituent Assembly sessions occurred. He condemned opposition parties’ criticisms, clarifying that leaders from both Houses of Parliament have designated roles in the event.

Public engagement initiatives include mass readings of the Preamble at gram sabhas, Preamble-themed art in panchayat offices and schools, and state-level exhibitions of the Constitution. A commemorative portal invites citizens to read and record the Preamble online, with certificates available for participants.

The Constituent Assembly, which took nearly three years (165 days across 11 sessions) to draft the Constitution, remains a cornerstone of India’s democratic journey. The upcoming celebration underscores its enduring legacy and the contributions of its architects.

Additionally, a booklet on the Constitution’s art and versions in Sanskrit and Maithili will be launched, alongside a short film on the Constitution’s creation and significance.
