The Delhi Judicial Service Association (DJSA) called on the Chief Justice of India to address recent disruptions at the Ghaziabad District Court, where a District Judge faced violent actions from certain lawyers. In a strongly worded appeal, the DJSA emphasized that judges “need a secure and supportive environment to fulfill duties without fear,” highlighting the importance of judicial safety and independence. The association condemned these actions as a direct threat to judicial dignity and public trust in the legal system.
The Delhi Judicial Service Association (DJSA) issued a formal letter to Chief Justice of India (CJI), expressing deep condemnation over the recent violence involving lawyers who reportedly attacked a District Judge in Ghaziabad.
The DJSA issued a strong statement condemning recent violent acts by some members of the legal community against the District Judge of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.
According to the association,
“Such behavior not only shows blatant disrespect toward the judiciary but also undermines the foundational principles of justice, integrity, and impartiality on which India’s legal system stands.”
Emphasizing the critical role of judges, the DJSA noted that judges must “impartially uphold the law, ensuring that justice is served based solely on facts and legal principles.”
They added that,
“Any form of personal attack, intimidation, or disrespect directed toward a judge is a direct challenge to judicial independence and threatens the very core of the democratic legal process.”
Judges, the association stressed, “need a secure and supportive environment to fulfill their duties without fear and undue influence.”
The association highlighted that lawyers, as guardians of the rule of law, bear a responsibility to conduct themselves with professionalism and respect. Actions that deviate from these ethical standards not only harm the individuals involved but also “erode public trust in the judicial system as a whole.”
In urging the individuals responsible to reflect on their actions, the DJSA appealed to the legal community to “collectively uphold the dignity of the judiciary, promote a culture of respect, and work toward maintaining an environment where justice can prevail without fear, prejudice, or undue influence.”
The association concluded by urging authorities to take “all necessary steps to address these incidents and reinforce the integrity of India’s legal system,” emphasizing the need to ensure judicial security to protect “the judiciary’s independence and dignity.”
The attack occurred earlier this month when a group of lawyers allegedly physically assaulted Ghaziabad District Judge Rakesh Kumar Singh. According to sources, the altercation began after an unfavourable ruling by Judge Singh, which triggered hostility among certain members of the legal fraternity.
The incident reportedly escalated quickly, with some lawyers resorting to physical force to express their grievances against the decision.
The situation escalated into a brawl, prompting police to use lathi-charge to disperse the lawyers, resulting in several injuries.
Footage of the altercation circulated on social media, showing police forcibly removing lawyers from the courtroom, where chairs reportedly thrown during the chaos. The conflict began when a group of lawyers surrounded the judge’s chamber following a heated argument with the district judge. The judge then called for police assistance to clear the area.
In response to the lathi-charge, the lawyers organized a protest and vandalized a police post within the court complex. They also voiced their discontent by shouting slogans against the judge.
The DJSA’s plea highlights the growing concern within the judiciary about ensuring a secure working environment. Legal professionals and associations await the CJI’s response, hoping for swift actions that uphold judicial dignity and reinforce the rule of law in India.
The Ghaziabad incident highlights the necessity for dialogue and resolution strategies that foster a collaborative environment between judges and lawyers. Both parties must recognize their shared goal of delivering justice and ensure that the courtroom remains a place for fair and impartial adjudication.
Following the incident, all judges in the court ceased their work, and the Bar Association has called for a meeting to address the situation.
