NEW DELHI: Former Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, has encouraged people to be kind to animals and adopt a more compassionate lifestyle. He shared this message while speaking at the 25th-anniversary celebration of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India.

The event, which had a Beatles-themed brunch, honored the organization’s work in protecting animal rights and promoting veganism.

At the event, DY Chandrachud praised PETA India for its dedication to animal welfare over the years. He acknowledged how the organization has grown significantly, spreading awareness about animal rights across the country and beyond.

“PETA India has done remarkable work in the last 25 years, and what began as just a small movement has now spread its wings across India and beyond. We recognise that we have an important role in spreading compassion, love, and kindness, and remember that the other species on this planet have so much to teach us,” Chandrachud said.

His speech focused on recognizing animals as sentient beings, which means they can feel pain and emotions. He urged people to show kindness towards them and understand their importance in the ecosystem.

Ingrid Newkirk, the founder of PETA entities worldwide, also spoke at the event. She highlighted the suffering of animals, emphasizing that every creature, no matter its size or species, deserves to be treated with care.

According to a statement from PETA India, Newkirk said that people must acknowledge the pain and suffering animals go through, and work towards creating a world where they are not harmed or exploited.

PETA India Director, Poorva Joshipura, also praised DY Chandrachud and his family for their dedication to veganism and animal protection. She acknowledged their strong support for ethical living and their contributions to the movement for animal rights.
