BENGALURU: India is witnessing a shift in its food habits, moving away from traditional millet-based and locally rooted diets to a Westernized, carb-heavy food culture. This change is seen as a key reason behind the increasing cases of diabetes in the country, according to former Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.

He shared these insights on Thursday during the launch of the book Diabetes No More by the late Dr. K Bhujang Shetty, founder of Narayana Nethralaya. The book explores the idea that diabetes is not an unavoidable genetic condition but a lifestyle-related disease. It is available in both Kannada and English and promotes the concept of reversing diabetes through a ‘low carbohydrate diet’.

During the event, Justice Chandrachud highlighted a personal story about his father-in-law, whose health saw remarkable improvement due to a healthier diet. He also spoke about his own lifestyle changes, such as adopting a vegan diet, which helped improve his overall well-being.

Justice Chandrachud emphasized the role of diet and lifestyle in controlling and reversing diabetes, stating that while genetics play a role, the environment and lifestyle choices are crucial. He appreciated Dr. Shetty’s own story of overcoming diabetes through strict dietary discipline, calling it an inspiring example of personal health management.

He further advocated for going back to traditional, balanced living, which includes eating nutritious foods, regular exercise, and managing stress. Sharing more details about his father-in-law’s journey, he noted that dietary changes reduced his insulin requirement from 20 doses a day to just one.

Justice Chandrachud also drew attention to how modern Indians are neglecting traditional foods like millets in favor of rice and wheat, considering them symbols of prosperity due to their association with Western culture. He explained how this shift has not only affected individual health but also led to the loss of valuable traditional knowledge about nutrition and wellness.

Additionally, he stressed the importance of breastfeeding in preventing chronic conditions like diabetes, cholesterol, and asthma. Highlighting the societal attitude towards breastfeeding, he remarked,

“It is essential to create a society where breastfeeding is not stigmatised, but encouraged.”

The discussion served as a reminder to adopt healthier dietary habits, preserve traditional food wisdom, and embrace a balanced lifestyle to combat lifestyle-related diseases like diabetes.
