Fair Play, Patience, Respect & Teamwork Are Qualities That Make Both a Good Cricketer and a Good Judge: Justice Vikram Nath

NEW DELHI: Cricket and law may seem worlds apart, but Supreme Court judge Justice Vikram Nath believes the two share remarkable similarities. While inaugurating the Mohinder Kohli Memorial T-10 Tennis Ball Cricket Tournament at the Delhi High Court, Justice Nath highlighted the qualities that make both a good cricketer and a good judge.

“fair play, patience, respect, teamwork, and holding on to principles under pressure.”

Justice Nath explained that cricket and law are not just games or professions; they have become integral to life itself. Drawing a historical connection, he noted that British rule introduced India to both the rulebook of cricket and the tradition of common law. Over time, Indians adapted both into their cultural legacy, making them symbols of fairness, integrity, and justice.

“In law, we speak of the spirit of the Constitution, and in cricket, we speak of the spirit of the game. Both are founded on justice, fairness, and respect,”

Justice Nath said, highlighting the shared principles of the two disciplines.

Adding a touch of humor, he remarked,

“A judge knows exactly when they will retire, but a batsman never knows which delivery might be their last.”

The T-10 tournament is organized in memory of Mohinder Kohli, the mother of retired Supreme Court judge Justice Hima Kohli and her sister Neelu Kohli. Justice Nath emphasized that the event is more than just a sporting competition; it is a tribute to motherhood and a celebration of sisterhood.

“Cricket teaches us that every over is a new opportunity, life is no different,”

he said, inspiring participants to approach the game and life with resilience and determination.

Justice Nath also highlighted the transformation in cricket, celebrating the historic 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup victory. He observed that this triumph erased old divides between men’s and women’s cricket, proving that the game belongs to talent, not gender.

“There was a time when cricket was considered only a men’s sport. But in 2025, the Indian women’s team showed that cricket is about skill, determination, and heart. Just like the 1983 men’s team changed Indian cricket forever, the 2025 World Cup revolutionized women’s cricket,”

he noted.

A core lesson from both cricket and law, Justice Nath emphasized, is the ability to make the right decision under pressure. Whether facing a fast bowler or a complex legal case, the principles of focus, fairness, and integrity remain the same.
