Former Odisha Governor & Senior Advocate Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare Passes Away

Yetserday, On 15th June, Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare, former Odisha governor and Senior Advocate, has passed away. Bhandare had a distinguished legal career, practicing before the Supreme Court and serving as the SCBA President for two terms. His contributions to the legal field and his role as governor were widely respected. His passing marks the end of a significant era in both the judiciary and public service.

Respected senior advocate and former Odisha governor, Murlidhar C Bhandare, passed away on June 15, 2024, at the age of 95. He was born on December 10, 1928, and had a distinguished career in the legal field.

Bhandare practiced as a Senior Advocate before the Supreme Court and held the prestigious position of President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for two terms. He also served three terms as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) between 1980 and 1994.

In August 2007, Bhandare appointed as the Governor of Odisha, a role he held until March 2013. During his tenure as the state’s Governor, he contributed significantly to the development and welfare of the people of Odisha.

In December 2023, he released his memoir titled “The Arc of Memory.”

Following his passing, Odisha’s current Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, along with former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, extended their heartfelt condolences.

On his official X account, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed,

“It deeply saddens me to learn about the passing of Muralidhar Chandrakant Bhandare, the former Governor of Odisha. His Highness Bhandare’s tenure was marked by significant contributions. We pray for his soul’s eternal peace and offer our heartfelt sympathy to his loved ones.”

Similarly, former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik shared on X

“The news of Muralidhar Chandrakant Bhandare’s passing brings great sorrow. As a distinguished Governor of Odisha and a veteran political figure, his humble and gracious demeanour, coupled with his commitment to the state’s advancement and people’s well-being, will remain an enduring inspiration. May his soul find peace, and I extend my condolences to his grieving family.”

The cremation ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 16, at 5 PM at Lodhi Road Crematorium in Delhi.

Bhandare’s passing marks the end of an era, as he widely respected for his legal expertise, his dedication to public service, and his unwavering commitment to the rule of law.

His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of legal professionals and public servants.
