Former Delhi High Court Chief Justice GC Mittal has passed away at the age of 90. His family announced the news through the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, marking the end of a respected legal legacy.

Former Chief Justice of the Delhi and Rajasthan High Courts, Justice Gokal Chand Mittal, has passed away at the age of 92.

His family announced the news through the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, stating,

“With profound grief and sorrow, it is to inform that Hon’ble Mr. Justice G.C. Mital, Former Chief Justice of Delhi and Rajasthan High Courts and acting Chief Justice of this High Court has left for his heavenly abode today i.e. 05.06.2025. Cremation shall take place tomorrow, 06.06.2025 (Friday) at 11:00 A.M. at Electric Crematorium, Sector-25, Chandigarh.”

Justice Mittal was born on March 4, 1933. After completing his law studies, he became an advocate in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1956, primarily practicing civil law in Chandigarh.

He was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court in February 1979 and became a permanent judge in June 1982. In August 1991, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, and in March 1994, he was transferred to the Rajasthan High Court, where he served until his retirement in March 1995.

Justice GC Mittal had a distinguished career in the Indian judiciary, having served not only as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court but also as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He was widely respected for his deep understanding of law, clarity of thought, and fair approach in adjudication.

His judgments were known for being well-reasoned and written in simple language, making them accessible to lawyers and litigants alike.

Born in 1934, Justice Mittal pursued his law degree from Punjab University and began his legal practice in the early 1960s. He gained recognition for his expertise in civil and constitutional law. His sharp legal mind and commitment to ethical practice quickly earned him a place in the judiciary.

He was appointed as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where he served with distinction. He later became the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, where he continued to contribute significantly to Indian jurisprudence.

Justice Mittal was also involved in judicial administration and reform. During his tenure, he worked towards streamlining court procedures and improving case disposal rates. He believed in speedy justice and consistently urged the Bar and Bench to maintain discipline and decorum in the courtroom.

Outside the courtroom, Justice GC Mittal was known for his simplicity, humility, and passion for education. Even after his retirement, he remained active in legal and academic circles, mentoring young lawyers and writing on matters of law and governance. He often spoke at legal seminars and remained a respected voice on judicial ethics and constitutional values.
