The Election Commission of India has strongly denied claims that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) can be tampered with or hacked. The Commission emphasized that tampering with EVMs in India is simply not possible.
These comments came after Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla and SpaceX and the world’s richest man, questioned the security of EVMs following the Lok Sabha election results last year.
Musk had expressed his concerns about the possibility of EVM hacking.
What Elon Musk Said
On June 15, 2022, Elon Musk tweeted,
“The use of EVMs should be abolished. It can be hacked by any human or artificial intelligence (AI).”
The Election Commission’s Reply
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar addressed these concerns during a press conference held to announce the Delhi Assembly elections. While he did not name anyone specifically, he indirectly responded to Musk’s allegations.
Kumar pointed out that the claims being made might apply to systems in the United States, where electronic voting machines are sometimes connected to the Internet and use different technologies. However, he clarified that such vulnerabilities do not exist in India.
Kumar firmly stated,
“India’s EVMs cannot be tampered with.”
He further explained that the machines are standalone and not connected to any external networks, making hacking impossible.
He assured that Indian EVMs are free from bugs and viruses. Kumar also highlighted that the Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed the security and reliability of EVMs, emphasizing,
“This allegation is baseless.”
The Election Commission’s response reaffirmed its confidence in the robustness of India’s electoral system, dismissing concerns raised by Musk as inapplicable to the Indian context.
