Evidence In Courts From Police Stations: Advocates To Continue Strike Against Delhi LG's Notification After Meeting With Authorities

NEW DELHI: The coordination committee of all district bar associations of Delhi has unanimously decided to extend the ongoing lawyers’ strike for the fifth consecutive day on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, in protest against the Lieutenant Governor’s recent notification. The notification, issued on August 13, allows police officials to present evidence in courts virtually from police stations, a move that has sparked widespread opposition from the legal fraternity.

Tarun Rana, Secretary of the New Delhi Bar Association (NDBA) and Secretary General of the coordination committee, confirmed that despite meetings with Delhi’s Chief Minister and other authorities, no concrete solution has emerged. As a result, advocates will continue their strike across all district courts in the capital.

Rana further announced that public prosecutors, including those representing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), as well as police officials such as naib courts, will not be permitted to appear in court during the strike. He stressed that this decision reflects the collective will of the committee.

The committee has also resolved to hold demonstrations outside all Delhi court complexes on August 27 to raise public awareness about what it calls an “arbitrary notification” that undermines the justice system.

“Since the impugned notification is against the public at large, there shall be a demonstration… to make the public aware of this arbitrary notification,”

Rana stated.

He expressed gratitude to members of the NDBA and all stakeholders for their solidarity and cooperation, urging continued support in the protest.

Background of the Protest

Lawyers across Delhi have been completely abstaining from work since August 22, after the notification was issued. On Monday, the Bar Council of India (BCI) stepped in by writing a letter to the Delhi LG, demanding immediate withdrawal of the order and insisting that police testimony must be recorded physically in courtrooms rather than virtually.

The coordination committee had earlier hinted at the possibility of calling off the strike following assurances of a “positive decision” from the authorities. However, after reviewing the situation on Tuesday evening, it unanimously chose to continue its protest.
