A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Supreme Court concerning environmental law violations in Mathura’s Taj Trapezium Zone. Advocate Narendra Kumar Goswami seeks judicial intervention against illegal tree felling and fraudulent land transactions. The PIL cites constitutional infringements and aims to uphold environmental norms, protect sacred trees, and preserve ecological integrity in sensitive areas.

Mathura: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court, raising alarm over alleged violations of environmental laws in the ecologically sensitive Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) in Mathura. The PIL highlights concerns about illegal felling of trees and fraudulent land transactions linked to the establishment of a residential colony.

The petitioner, Advocate Narendra Kumar Goswami, has called for immediate judicial intervention to enforce environmental laws and restore ecological balance in the area. He stated,

“The title of the PIL is Narendra Kumar Goswami vs. Union of India & Others. It highlights the illegal felling of 454 sacred trees and fraudulent land transactions exceeding Rs 500 crore within the ecologically sensitive Taj Trapezium Zone in Mathura.”

The TTZ, a protected area surrounding the iconic Taj Mahal, is subject to stringent environmental safeguards to preserve its ecological integrity and protect against activities that could harm its environment.

The PIL asserts that the violations infringe upon Articles 14, 21, and 25 of the Constitution, which guarantee equality before the law, the right to life, and the freedom to practice religion, respectively. The destruction of sacred trees, seen as an attack on cultural and ecological heritage, underscores the urgent need for action.

Goswami also mentioned that two similar PILs had previously been filed in the National Green Tribunal (NGT). These cases, too, revolved around environmental degradation in the TTZ.

The PIL seeks to ensure compliance with environmental norms, prevent further ecological harm, and safeguard constitutional rights. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for protecting sensitive ecological zones across India.
