However, the selection process has sparked controversy due to objections raised by Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a senior leader from the Congress party and the opposition’s representative in the committee.
Chowdhury has voiced significant concerns regarding the methodology employed during the selection process. He argued that he was not provided with the shortlisted candidates’ names in advance, a step he believes was crucial for a transparent and informed decision-making process. Expressing his discontent, Chowdhury remarked,
“the short-listed names of officers were not made available to him in advance.”
He further elaborated that he had specifically requested a list prior to the meeting to review the credentials of all shortlisted individuals. According to his statement, He said-
“the Government had sent the names of 212 officers Wednesday,”
indicating his receipt of the names only a day before the meeting, which he implied did not allow adequate time for review.
Contradictory to Chowdhury’s account, there are claims from sources stating that
“the Government had sent Chowdhury five lists containing 236 names.”
These lists were comprehensive, encompassing a wide range of potential candidates, including 92 officers who retired as Secretary and Secretary equivalent in Government of India, along with 93 names of officers serving as Secretary and Secretary equivalent officers in Government of India.
Additionally, the lists contained names of 15 officers who retired as Chief Secretaries of state and union territories in the last one year, as well as 28 and 8 officers serving as chief secretaries in states and union territories.
This incident has highlighted the complexities and disputes often associated with high-level appointments in the governmental framework, especially when it involves significant positions such as the Election Commissioners. The disagreement between the selection committee members underlines the need for a clear and transparent process, ensuring that all participants are adequately informed and prepared to contribute to the decision-making process effectively.
