Lawyers across all Delhi district courts boycotted work to protest the alleged wrongful arrest of advocate Vikram Singh by Gurugram Police’s STF. The legal fraternity called it an attack on the independence of the profession and demanded immediate withdrawal of charges.

NEW DELHI: On November 6, Lawyers across all district courts in Delhi successfully held a one-day strike on Thursday to protest what they called the “false implication” of an advocate in a murder case.
The protest was organised by the Coordination Committee of District Courts’ Bar Associations in Delhi, which had announced a complete strike on November 6.
The committee said that the strike was called after the Special Task Force (STF) of the Gurugram Police allegedly
“illegally implicated advocate Vikram Singh merely because he was representing a co-accused in a murder case.”
Lawyers decided to stay away from work across all district courts to register their strong objection to what they described as an attack on the independence of the legal profession.
Background
In a statement, the committee demanded the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of “the false implication and all consequential proceedings” against the advocate.
The committee said the protest was to show outrage over the actions of the Gurugram STF, which recently arrested advocate Vikram Singh. Lawyers claimed that Singh had been “illegally implicated” in the case only because he was performing his duty as a lawyer by defending one of the accused.
In a communication released after a meeting held on Tuesday, the committee said that its decision to strike came after discussing the “unlawful” actions of the Gurugram STF.
The circular issued by the committee said,
“The coordination committee views this incident as a direct and deliberate attack on the independence of the legal profession and an attempt to intimidate and silence advocates from discharging their professional duties without fear.”
Committee leaders — Chairman V. K. Singh and Secretary General Anil Kr Basoya — expressed deep concern over the issue and said that such actions not only target one lawyer but also
“undermine both the rule of law and the confidence of the legal community.”
They further said that the arrest of advocate Vikram Singh was “a deliberate attempt to suppress legal freedom,” and that punishing a lawyer for defending a co-accused went against the very foundation of justice and fairness.
The committee added that it could not remain silent when a lawyer was being punished for fulfilling his professional responsibility towards a client. Calling for unity among lawyers, the committee appealed to all members of the Bar to support the November 6 protest and “stand united in defense of the legal fraternity’s independence.”
They also demanded that the authorities “immediately retract the charges against Singh” and ensure that no advocate is ever harassed for doing their professional duty.
The committee’s statement and the successful strike have brought attention to growing concerns within the legal community about what many see as increasing interference with the independent functioning of advocates.
Lawyers believe that incidents like these damage the credibility of the justice system and threaten the ability of advocates to perform their roles freely.
As the protest gained support, all eyes are now on the Gurugram Police and the concerned authorities to see how they respond to the legal community’s strong demand for justice and fairness.
The controversy began after advocate Vikram Singh was arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Gurugram Police. His arrest drew sharp criticism from the Delhi legal fraternity.
Both the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) and the Coordination Committee of All District Court Bar Associations of Delhi condemned the arrest, calling it an “illegal and arbitrary action” against a practicing advocate who was only performing his professional role.
In a resolution dated November 4, 2025, the Executive Committee of the DHCBA stated that the arrest of advocate Vikram Singh, a registered member of the Bar (D/3239/2019), was a “gross misuse of power” and an “attack on the independence of the legal profession.”
The DHCBA resolution further emphasised that every lawyer must be free to discharge their professional duties “without fear or intimidation.”
The association also demanded that the false case against Singh be immediately withdrawn and that strict accountability be ensured against those responsible for the “unlawful act.”
The resolution was signed by DHCBA Honorary Secretary Vikram Singh Panwar, reflecting the strong and united stand taken by the Delhi legal community against the alleged misuse of power by law enforcement authorities.
The ongoing developments have once again raised the larger issue of protecting the independence of advocates and ensuring that no lawyer is targeted simply for representing their clients in accordance with the principles of justice and the rule of law.
