The oath-taking ceremony marks another important step in bolstering the strength of the High Court’s bench, which now has 43 judges as compared to its approved capacity of 60.
These new appointments come at a time when the Delhi High Court has been actively working to reduce its case backlog and improve judicial efficiency. With the induction of Justice Vinod Kumar, Justice Shail Jain, and Justice Madhu Jain, the High Court moves closer to its full sanctioned strength, a development welcomed by legal practitioners and litigants alike.
Their appointment administered the oath of office by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya in a ceremony held at the High Court premises. Notably, all three took their oaths in Hindi.
The three judges, all from the 1992 batch of the Delhi Judicial Service, were previously serving as Principal District and Sessions Judges:
- Justice Vinod Kumar at Karkardooma Court
- Justice Madhu Jain at Tis Hazari Court
- Justice Shail Jain at Saket Court
Their elevations follow recommendations by the Supreme Court Collegium, led by CJI B.R. Gavai. Justices Shail Jain and Madhu Jain were recommended on July 1, followed by Justice Vinod Kumar on July 2. The Centre notified their appointments on July 22.
The Collegium forwarded their recommendations earlier this month, and the Central government gave its approval earlier this week, culminating in today’s swearing-in.
This swearing-in comes shortly after six other judges were also appointed to the Delhi High Court on July 21, as part of ongoing efforts to fill judicial vacancies and strengthen the judiciary.
