Defamation Case: Adv. Vishnu Shankar Jain Sues Akhilesh Yadav, Seeks Rs 1 Compensation Over X Posts

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain has filed a defamation suit against Samajwadi Party (SP) chief and Member of Parliament Akhilesh Yadav, alleging that a series of social media posts have caused serious damage to his professional reputation. The suit has been filed before Delhi’s Patiala House Court, with Jain seeking symbolic compensation of ₹1.

According to the petition, Akhilesh Yadav made three posts in November 2024 on the social media platform X (Twitter) that allegedly tarnished Jain’s image. The posts were reportedly related to a civil appeal concerning the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.

Jain contends that these posts falsely portrayed him as being responsible for the violence that erupted on November 24, 2024, during a Court Commissioner’s survey of the mosque. The petition claims that SP’s official social media accounts amplified these allegations, blaming Jain for the unrest.

In his plea, Vishnu Shankar Jain has asserted that he was discharging his professional duties strictly in accordance with court orders. He further stated that the violence was not spontaneous and that a violent mob had allegedly gathered with the intention of attacking him during the survey process.

The petition describes the allegations made by Akhilesh Yadav and the Samajwadi Party as “misleading, defamatory, and propaganda-driven.”

A major contention in the defamation suit relates to allegations that Jain raised “Jai Shri Ram” slogans while proceeding to the survey site, allegedly inciting communal violence. Jain has categorically denied these claims, stating that no evidence exists to support the assertion that such slogans led to the outbreak of violence.

The petition further argues that Akhilesh Yadav was fully aware that Jain was accompanying the district administration as part of a court-mandated exercise, yet chose to make statements that damaged his credibility.

Jain has also informed the court that he had sent a legal notice to Akhilesh Yadav demanding an apology and retraction of the statements. However, despite receiving the notice, Yadav allegedly neither apologised nor expressed any regret, prompting Jain to approach the court seeking legal redress.
