Constitution Is India’s Moral Compass, India Must Protect Its Values: Former CJI Gavai

NEW DELHI: Former Chief Justice of India B R Gavai has urged citizens to uphold the guiding values of the Indian Constitution, describing it as the nation’s “moral compass” and a living document that continues to shape India’s democratic journey. He was speaking on Wednesday at the valedictory session of the national conference titled “The Living Constitution: 75 Years of Democracy, Dignity, and Development.”

Organised by the Dr Ambedkar Foundation under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the two-day event marked the grand finale of the year-long “Samvidhan@75” celebrations on Constitution Day.

Reiterating the relevance of constitutional values, Gavai said India must remain steadfast in protecting its democratic principles, adding that the Constitution continues to evolve with the needs of society.

He emphasised that

“Digital India must be seen as an instrument of democratic participation rather than merely a technological programme,”

stressing that technology should enhance inclusiveness and accessibility for all citizens.

During the session, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar launched the first phase of the “Consolidation of All Portals of the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment.”

The initiative seeks to integrate multiple digital platforms into a unified single interface, enhancing transparency, efficiency, and accessibility for beneficiaries.

Calling it a landmark in digital transformation, the minister stated that the step “sets a benchmark for other ministries” and represents a major leap toward inclusive and seamless governance.

The conference featured two panel discussions focusing on evolving constitutional pathways:

1. The Living Constitution in Action

Experts, including vice-chancellors, legal scholars, and senior advocates, discussed:

2. Constitutional Pathways to Social Justice & Inclusive Development

The conference also saw the publication of “One India Through Digital India,” written by James Stephen Meka, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair Professor at Andhra University.
