Collaboration Between Bar and Bench Is Key to Justice Delivery System: CJI Surya Kant

The Delhi High Court Bar Association celebrated Justice Surya Kant’s appointment as Chief Justice of India at the Main Court Building. In his address, CJI Kant emphasized, “Collaboration between bar and bench is crucial in the justice delivery system.”

The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) celebrated the appointment of Justice Surya Kant as the Chief Justice of India during a ceremony held on Thursday in the lobby of the Main Court Building.

In his address, CJI Kant emphasized the importance of collaboration between the bar and bench in the justice delivery system.

CJI Kant remarked,

“The Bar must extend beyond the articulation of grievances to proactive engagement. It is here that I call upon the members of the Bar to engage wholeheartedly in the administration side of justice by offering practical suggestions, volunteering new systems and participating in consultative processes to ensure that reforms are not only well-intended, but are workable also,”

He also commended the DHCBA for its spirit of collaboration and acknowledged its role in advancing arbitration and mediation.

During the event, DHCBA president and Senior Advocate N. Hariharan expressed concerns about inadequate physical infrastructure and the “diminishing elevation” of Delhi High Court lawyers to judgeships.

Senior Advocate Hariharan noted,

“Despite 47,000 advocates, only three have been elevated as judges since August 2024,”

Earlier, On November 24, 2025, Justice Surya Kant was officially sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India in a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, attended by Chief Justices and senior judges from several countries, including Bhutan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

His appointment took effect on November 24, following a decision by the President of India on October 30, 2025.

Justice Surya Kant became a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019, and is also the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee as of November 12, 2024. He is set to retire on February 9, 2027.

He was appointed a permanent Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004. The upcoming CJI graduated from Government Post Graduate College in Hisar in 1981 and earned a law degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984.

He began his legal career practicing at the District Court in Hisar in 1984 before moving to Chandigarh in 1985 to practice in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
