Two individuals have filed trademark applications for the viral ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ name, turning the satirical online movement into a legal flashpoint. The filings follow remarks by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant during a Supreme Court of India hearing.
Two individuals have filed trademark applications for the viral “Cockroach Janata Party” name, turning a satirical online movement into a legal flashpoint.
According to listings on the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks website, separate applications have been submitted under Class 45. Both applications have cleared the initial “Formalities Check Pass” stage.
The “Cockroach Janata Party” trend first spread through memes, parody posts, and political satire after remarks connected to the Chief Justice of India went viral over youth-related issues.
The satire quickly transformed into a large online phenomenon, drawing massive engagement across X and Instagram. Shortly after it surged, the CJP account on X was geo-blocked in India, but the satirical movement soon returned to the platform sparking renewed public debate over censorship, parody content, and political satire.
After the online buzz intensified, trademark filings associated with the “Cockroach Janata Party” name have now surfaced publicly. Registry records indicate that two separate people have moved to secure trademark rights over the viral name. While the filings have passed the early scrutiny stage, they still need to go through detailed examination and potential opposition proceedings before any registration can be granted.
The dispute escalated further when CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke alleged that attempts were made to access his Instagram account following the X restriction.
The hashtag #CockroachJanataParty gained momentum after the Chief Justice, during a hearing last week, compared unemployed youth who shift toward activism via media, social media, and RTI to cockroaches.
The CJI later clarified that his remarks were aimed at those who enter professions with fake degrees. As the comments went viral, a social media movement emerged, with many youth describing themselves as “cockroaches who are not afraid to question the system.”
Additionally, Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant issued a clarification regarding his controversial cockroaches remark, stating that a section of the media had misquoted his oral observations and incorrectly portrayed them as criticism of the country’s youth.
Abhijeet Dipke, a political communications strategist who previously worked with the Aam Aadmi Party, started a page titled “Cockroach Janata Party” and launched associated social media accounts. Within days, its X and Instagram accounts amassed millions of followers.
The X handle of “Cockroach Janata Party” was suspended today following a legal demand from the Government of India. Looking to build on the momentum, two trademark applications have been filed.
Records from the Trade Marks Registry’s public search portal show that two separate applications have been lodged for the wordmark “COCKROACH JANTA PARTY” / “Cockroach Janta Party” under Class 45, which covers legal and certain personal services.
According to public data on the Trade Marks Registry portal, the first trademark request an application number 7737937 was filed by Azim Adambhai Jam for the wordmark “COCKROACH JANTA PARTY.”
A second filing, numbered 7741481, was made by Akhand Swaroop for the mark “Cockroach Janta Party.” Both filings currently reflect the status “Formalities Chk Pass.”
