Tamil Nadu CM Stalin Calls For Equality In Indian Judiciary: "Tamil Language Should Also Be Permitted In Supreme Court"

Thanjavur: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said on Monday that Tamil language should also be allowed for use, as a court language, in the Supreme Court.

He made this statement while attending a wedding, where he also remembered the historic step taken by the first DMK government in 1967, led by former CM C.N. Annadurai, to legally recognize self-respect marriages—a progressive form of secular marriage without traditional rituals or priests. The couple at the wedding were from DMK families.

Stalin pointed out that Justices R. Mahadevan and M.M. Sundresh, both from the Supreme Court, delivered their speeches in Tamil at the event.

He said,

“Tamil language should also be allowed for use, as a court language, in the apex court.”

He stressed that this demand is not new and that DMK and others have been continuously asking for it. The Chief Minister said he was happy that some judgments are already being made available in Tamil.

He said,

“This representation was being made continuously,”

and he appreciated that steps were being taken already to promote Tamil in the judiciary.

He also said,

“The Tamil language should be allowed to argue matters in the Supreme Court and the Madras High Court and this had been a long time demand,”

and he appealed to the judges to support this cause.

Judge B. Pugalendhi of the Madras High Court was also present at the function.

The Central Government shared relevant data on this issue. As of September 27, 2024, the Supreme Court had translated 37,661 judgments into regional languages, including 2,559 in Tamil.

In the same period, 892 judgments from the Madras High Court were made available in Tamil.

This information was officially given by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, in the Rajya Sabha on December 12, 2024, as a response to questions raised by Vaiko and M. Shanmugam regarding the use of regional languages in court proceedings.
