On the second day of his visit to Haryana, Surya Kant, the Chief Justice of India, reached his ancestral village Petwad in Hansi district by riding in an open jeep. A special ceremony was organised in the village to honour him.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal was also present with the Chief Justice during the visit. The atmosphere in the village was emotional and celebratory as Justice Surya Kant went back to the place where his journey in education had begun.

Speaking to the villagers, the Chief Justice remembered his childhood and school days in Petwad. As reported by the Times of India, Justice Surya Kant said that he completed his primary education, high school and Class 10 from the village school at a time when facilities were very limited.

He recalled that the village had only a co-educational middle school, the number of teachers was very small, and students often studied while sitting on the ground. Despite these hardships, he said that the teachers were deeply dedicated and committed to their students.

Justice Surya Kant emotionally remembered his English teacher, Master Prem Singh of Madanheri, and shared how teachers went beyond their duty to help rural students succeed.

He said,

“They used to teach us till 11 pm and sleep in a room covered with paddy straw. It was not just an education, but it was a parental penance.”

He explained that the teacher did this only so that talented children from villages could pass their exams and move ahead in life. The Chief Justice said that whatever position he holds today is because of the blessings and guidance of his teachers and the elders of his village.

Recalling an important moment after passing Class 10, Justice Surya Kant spoke about the support he received from his family, especially his father. He said that his father called all his brothers together and told them to choose Arts and Law or any other field according to their own interest.

Sharing this memory, the Chief Justice said,

“My parents allowed me to choose my own path.”

He also mentioned that even though there were discussions about government jobs and competitive exams, his family fully respected his personal choice.

Addressing parents and villagers, Justice Surya Kant strongly advised that children should be allowed to choose their own careers, even if it brings financial challenges.

He said,

“The biggest source of wealth is education.”

He added that the responsibility of educating talented children should not rest only on parents but should be shared by the entire village and society.

While sharing memories of his childhood friend Thaluram, Justice Surya Kant said that his friend’s father worked in the fields and always blessed him by saying,

“You bring glory to the village.”

The Chief Justice said such simple words of encouragement stayed with him and motivated him throughout his life.

The visit of Chief Justice Surya Kant to his ancestral village stood as a powerful message on the value of education, respect for teachers, freedom of career choice, and the collective responsibility of society in shaping the future of children, especially in rural India.
