Justice Bose, who was appointed to the apex court on May 24, 2019, is set to vacate his position on April 10, with plans to assume the role of director at the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal shortly thereafter.
Justice Bose, recognized as the fifth senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, participated in a ceremonial bench led by Chief Justice Chandrachud on his final day, marking a tradition in the apex court’s practices. Chief Justice Chandrachud extolled Justice Bose as not only a colleague but also a friend endowed with multiple virtues. He highlighted Justice Bose’s qualities, saying,
“My learned brother Justice Aniruddha is well read, hard working, extraordinarily equitable, then to the core a compassionate person and a judge who has got an unending source of desire to do justice to the last person in the line.”
This acknowledgment sheds light on Justice Bose’s dedication to fairness and his compassionate approach to justice.
Further underscoring his suitability for leading the National Judicial Academy, Chief Justice Chandrachud shared the collective belief of the judges in Justice Bose’s unparalleled fit for the role, citing him as
“Our academician, jurist, Justice Bose.”
He expressed how much Justice Bose will be missed, referencing his remarks at a recent SCBA function:
“We are going to really miss Justice Bose as I said yesterday in my speech in the SCBA function that he reflects a true Bengali ‘Bhadralok’ (gentleman).”
In his farewell, Justice Bose offered thanks to both the bar and his fellow judges for their unwavering support. Reflecting on his tenure as a Supreme Court judge, he shared a profound realization:
“What I have learned in these five years (as SC judge) is more than the aggregate of what I had learned in my earlier 60 years.”
This statement underscores the significant impact his service on the Supreme Court has had on his personal and professional growth.
Justice Bose’s journey to the Supreme Court bench began after his academic pursuits in Kolkata, where he completed his LLB at Surendranath Law College, following his higher secondary education at St. Lawrence High School. His legal career kicked off in 1985 with a practice focused on constitutional, civil, and intellectual property matters at the Calcutta High Court. His commitment and expertise led to his appointment as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court in January 2004, and he later ascended to the role of Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on August 11, 2018, before his elevation to the Supreme Court.
Justice Bose’s retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in his judicial career, but also the beginning of another as he steps into a pivotal role at the National Judicial Academy. His legacy as a judge who exemplified the virtues of hard work, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to justice will undoubtedly influence his future contributions to the judiciary and legal education in India.
