Speaker Rahul Narwekar introduced the motion, calling it a moment of pride for the entire state. The House passed the motion with full support, reflecting unity in honouring Justice Gavai’s elevation.
As part of the occasion, CJI Gavai is also scheduled to deliver a special address on “The Constitution of India,” emphasizing its relevance in modern democratic governance.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, while addressing the Maharashtra State Legislature on Tuesday, paid tribute to Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s vision of constitutional supremacy and the essential independence of the judiciary. His remarks came after he was formally felicitated by both houses of the Maharashtra Legislature for becoming the 52nd Chief Justice of India.
In a moving speech, CJI Gavai echoed Dr Ambedkar’s foundational beliefs, stating that the Constitution is the supreme law that unites the country both in times of peace and crisis. He highlighted Ambedkar’s assertion that
“The three pillars of democracy—the Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary—must function within their respective boundaries as laid out in the Constitution.”
Justice Gavai emphasized Ambedkar’s enduring view that the judiciary must act as the watchdog and custodian of citizens’ rights and, crucially, remain free from any form of executive interference.
He also cited Ambedkar’s belief that the
“Constitution must not remain static, but should evolve organically to meet the changing needs of society.”
The Maharashtra Legislature celebrated Gavai’s historic appointment, with Speaker Rahul Narwekar leading the congratulatory motion, which was passed unanimously. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also honored the CJI on behalf of the state legislature, calling it a proud moment for Maharashtra.
CJI Gavai’s address underscored the enduring relevance of Ambedkar’s constitutional ideals and the critical role of the judiciary in safeguarding democratic values in India.
