NEW DELHI: In a remarkable demonstration of mentorship and encouragement within the legal community, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud extended an unexpected opportunity to a junior advocate in the Supreme Court. The incident unfolded while Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was delayed in another courtroom.
As the junior advocate commenced her arguments, CJI Chandrachud turned to the Solicitor General and encouraged him to allow his junior to continue presenting the case. This supportive gesture did not go unnoticed and prompted Senior Advocate Raju Ramachandran to share a heartfelt anecdote from his own early days in the legal profession.
Recalling an incident from 48 years ago, Ramachandran narrated-
“When I was a young lawyer with just two months of experience, I appeared before Justice YV Chandrachud, who is the father of the current CJI.”
He fondly remembered how the senior Justice Chandrachud had acknowledged him by name during the proceedings, an act that significantly boosted his confidence.
“Justice YV Chandrachud’s recognition boosted my confidence as a young advocate,”
