NEW DELHI: On Friday(21st June),Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud participated in the International Yoga Day celebrations with the Supreme Court registry staff, emphasizing the profound lessons that yoga imparts.
Addressing the gathering at the Supreme Court, he underlined the significance of this global event, stating-
“International Yoga Day is a festival and a celebration, demonstrating commitment both personally and socially. It also encourages adopting an ideal lifestyle.”
In his address, the Chief Justice highlighted four essential lessons that yoga teaches, each rooted in ancient wisdom and applicable to modern life. A note written by the Chief Justice in Hindi, where he elaborated on various yoga asanas and the values they represent.
The first lesson he mentioned was ‘Sadbhavna’ (Goodwill).
“Sadbhavna fosters respect for all creatures on Earth,”
-he explained, underscoring the importance of fostering compassion and understanding towards all living beings.
The second lesson, ‘Sashaktikaran’ (Empowerment), emphasizes the strength and empowerment that yoga can bring at an individual, social, and national level.
“Sashaktikaran strengthens individuals, society, and the nation,”
-he stated, highlighting the transformative power of yoga in enhancing personal and collective well-being.
‘Siddhant’ (Principles) was the third lesson he discussed. This principle, he noted, has a profound impact on our lifestyle choices.
“Siddhant influences our lifestyle,”
– the Chief Justice remarked, pointing out how the ethical framework provided by yoga can guide one’s daily actions and decisions.
The fourth and final lesson, ‘Samanvay’ (Coordination), teaches the harmony between breathing and physical movement.
“Samanvay teaches us to coordinate breathing with physical movement,”
-he said, emphasizing the importance of synchronizing mind and body through yoga practice.
These four lessons, according to the Chief Justice, encapsulate the holistic benefits of yoga, which extend beyond physical fitness to encompass mental and spiritual well-being. His reflections on yoga’s values offer a blueprint for leading a balanced and harmonious life.
The International Yoga Day event at the Supreme Court served as a reminder of yoga’s universal appeal and its potential to foster unity and peace. On the occasion of the 10th International Yoga Day, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud emphasized the significance of yoga in maintaining physical health and achieving spiritual growth. Speaking at a special event, the Chief Justice shared personal anecdotes and highlighted the benefits of yoga practice.
Reflecting on a recent incident, CJI Chandrachud said-
“Three days ago, while doing Surya Namaskar, I suddenly sprained my back.”
adding that the incident taught him that-
“We should always maintain humility.”
This experience underscored the importance of approaching yoga and life with humility and mindfulness.
The Chief Justice paid tribute to his 90-year-old yoga teacher, Anant Limaye, affectionately known as Limaye Kaka. Limaye, who retired from the State Bank of India and now resides in Pune, has been a guiding force in CJI Chandrachud’s yoga journey. The Chief Justice expressed his gratitude for the wisdom and guidance imparted by his mentor.
CJI Chandrachud revealed that he has been practicing yoga for the past 26 years, incorporating various asanas into his daily routine.
“I have been practicing yoga for the past 26 years, including Aalom-Vilom, Kapalbhati, Tadasana, and Pawan Muktasana.”
– he said. This long-standing commitment to yoga reflects the deep impact it has had on his life.
In an interview, the Chief Justice shared insights into his daily routine, stating that he wakes up at 3:30 am every day to practice yoga. This early morning ritual underscores his dedication to maintaining physical health and mental clarity through yoga.
The 10th International Yoga Day saw a massive turnout as Prime Minister Narendra Modi led celebrations at a mass yoga session in Srinagar.
Emphasizing the potential of yoga to boost tourism in Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Modi said-
“Yoga can help Jammu and Kashmir attract more tourists, creating new livelihood opportunities for residents.”
The Prime Minister’s remarks highlight the broader societal benefits of promoting yoga.

Several leaders from across the country joined in the celebrations, sharing glimpses of their yoga sessions.
