Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, dedicated several months to designing the new insignia for the Supreme Court, according to sources. The insignia represents a significant symbolic update for the judiciary. Chief Justice Chandrachud personally oversaw the process, aiming to modernize and reflect the core values of the institution.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court unveiled a new insignia, and the expansion of its complex is set to begin, marked by a ground breaking ceremony held yesterday. The insignia prominently features the Constitution of India, the Supreme Court building above it, and the Ashok Chakra at the top.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud spent several months working on the design. After much effort, it was decided that the design would symbolize the relationship between the Constitution, which grants the Supreme Court its authority, and the Ashok Chakra, representing the nation’s guiding principles.

Among those present at the ceremony were Chief Justice Chandrachud, Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, Justice Vikram Nath, and Justice BV Nagarathna, along with several other current and retired members of the Supreme Court.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar, Supreme Court Bar Association president Kapil Sibal, Supreme Court Advocate on Record Association president Vipin Nair, and Secretary General Nikhil Jain also took part in the groundbreaking ceremony.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud highlighted that the new Supreme Court building “is a symbol of the development as well as strength” of the institution. He emphasized that while the original structure will remain intact, the new additions will offer modern, state-of-the-art facilities, including a five-storey building with 29 additional courtrooms, judges’ chambers, and dedicated spaces for lawyers and registry staff.

The Chief Justice added that “apart from being an excellent example of architecture and fine arts,” the building will be completely eco-friendly, equipped with five-star facilities, automatic gates, lifts, and advanced evacuation measures to ensure rapid exits in case of emergencies.

Further elaborating on the expansion, Chief Justice Chandrachud explained that the new structure will span 86,500 square meters of built-up area and will be constructed in two phases. The first phase, launched on October 14, is expected to be completed within 29 months.
