Andhra Pradesh: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud highlighted the paramount importance of critical evaluation and independent thinking within the legal profession, underscoring the role of law education as a pivotal tool for serving society and fulfilling social responsibilities.

Delivering his address to the students of Sri Venkateswara University’s Department of Law during the commemoration of the integrated BL, LLB course’s ten-year anniversary, the CJI urged students-

“Embrace the legal profession as a form of social responsibility.”

Dispelling the misconception that success in the legal field hinges on assertive behavior or seeking frequent objections, the CJI stressed-

“Do thorough case evaluation, prioritize rationality and justice over combative strategies.”

Drawing from his personal experiences as a law student at Delhi University, Justice Chandrachud encouraged students to cultivate a culture of free thinking and to delve into global issues during their academic journey. He emphasized that such critical thinking fosters the development of competent legal practitioners. Reflecting on his interactions with professors and peers, he underscored the value of posing challenging questions and challenging conventional wisdom.

Highlighting the importance of attentive listening to opponents and employing reason and common sense in legal practice, the CJI acknowledged the complexities inherent in decision-making within the legal system. His emphasis on reason, justice, and critical thinking resonated deeply with the students, providing them with valuable insights for their future careers in law.

During the event, SVU Vice-Chancellor Prof V Sreekanth Reddy, Registrar O Md Hussain, SVU College of Arts Principal G Padmanaban, and Dean of Law VRC Krishnaiah extended their felicitations to Chief Justice of India Chandrachud for his enlightening remarks and significant contributions to the legal fraternity.
