After Maharashtra and Odisha, West Bengal on Thursday became the third state to have the Braille version of the constitution of India.

This initiative makes West Bengal the third state in the country to provide a Braille version of the Constitution for visually impaired individuals, following Maharashtra and Odisha.
This significant event marks a historic step towards inclusivity and accessibility within legal education and the legal profession, ensuring that the Constitution is available to visually impaired people. Speaking at the event, Professor Nirmal Kanti Chakrabarti, the Vice Chancellor of WBNUJS, expressed the importance of this achievement.
He said,
“This is a momentous occasion for us at WBNUJS. The Constitution of India in Braille will empower visually impaired individuals by providing them with direct access to our nation’s fundamental legal document. It is a significant step towards ensuring that everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, can understand the legislative, executive, and judicial system of India.”
The principal and staff of the Ramakrishna Mission Blind Boys School Academy were instrumental in developing the Braille version of the Constitution. The school principal remarked,
“The idea is a great thing and a challenge as well. It’s a happy day that we have done it and that NUJS is with the visually impaired.”
During the event, a student from the institution read out the Constitution in Braille, showcasing the accessibility and utility of the new version.
This development represents a noteworthy advancement in promoting equality and accessibility in the legal realm.
