CJI Chandrachud Arranges 'Laapataa Ladies' Screening for Supreme Court Judges Today

NEW DELHI: In a notable initiative spearheaded by the Chief Justice of India (CJI), DY Chandrachud, the Communication Division of the Supreme Court has arranged a special screening of the Hindi movie ‘Laapataa Ladies‘ for all Supreme Court judges, their spouses, and members of the registry. This event, set for today(on 9th August), underscores the Supreme Court’s commitment to year-round gender sensitisation and fostering a supportive work environment.

The screening will be graced by the presence of the movie’s producers, the veteran Bollywood actor Aamir Khan and film director Kiran Rao. The event is scheduled to take place at the auditorium within the Supreme Court’s administrative building complex, providing an intimate setting for this unique gathering.

This screening is not just a mere event but is part of a broader emphasis on gender sensitisation within the Supreme Court, a key priority for the CJI. The idea for this specific screening emerged from a personal experience of Kalpana Das, the wife of CJI Chandrachud. After watching the film with her staff, she suggested it as a powerful tool for sensitisation.

Sharing his thoughts on the initiative, CJI Chandrachud said-

“This initiative aims to sensitize the Supreme Court staff, which is why we are organizing this screening. Many activities at the Supreme Court often go unpublicized, such as our 24/7 Ayurvedic clinic for staff treatment and relaxation. This screening is also an opportunity for members to bond.”

The movie Laapataa Ladies has been well-received, currently streaming on Netflix after its theatrical release on March 1, 2023, to widespread acclaim. The film has also garnered international attention, being screened at the prestigious 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2023.

This event highlights the Supreme Court’s dedication not only to judicial excellence but also to the well-being and continuous education of its staff and members. By integrating cultural experiences like this movie screening into its activities, the Supreme Court under CJI Chandrachud’s leadership is setting a precedent for a more inclusive and empathetic judicial environment.

The screening is expected to foster a sense of community among the judges, their spouses, and registry members, while also serving as a reflective session on the themes presented in the film. This approach aligns with the Supreme Court’s broader objective to ensure that its members are not just legally proficient but also culturally and socially aware, thus enhancing their overall effectiveness in their roles.

The inclusion of a round-the-clock Ayurvedic clinic is another testament to the CJI’s commitment to the well-being of the Supreme Court staff, ensuring that they have access to holistic treatments and relaxation methods. These initiatives together contribute to a more supportive and progressive workplace within the apex judicial institution of the country.
