Centre Notifies Appointment of Justice Sujoy Paul as CJ of Calcutta HC Following CJI Surya Kant Collegium Recommendation

The Ministry of Law and Justice notified the appointment of Justice Sujoy Paul as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. The decision follows a Supreme Court Collegium recommendation made during its meeting held on January 9, 2026, recently.

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Law and Justice has officially announced the appointment of Justice Sujoy Paul, a Judge of the Calcutta High Court (previously associated with the Madhya Pradesh High Court), as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

This decision follows a recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium, made during a meeting on January 9, 2026.

Law Minister Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the news today via X, stating,

“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sujoy Paul, Judge, Calcutta High Court as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of the office. I convey my best wishes to him.”

Hon’ble Sri Justice Sujoy Paul was born on 21 June 1964 to Late Sri Noni Gopal Paul and Smt. Manjushri Paul. He completed his schooling at Pandit L.S. Jha Model Higher Secondary School and obtained his graduation, post-graduation, and LL.B degrees from Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.

He was enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh in 1990 and practised extensively in civil, constitutional, industrial, service, and other areas of law, appearing before various courts. Justice Sujoy Paul was elevated as a Judge of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh at Jabalpur on 27 May 2011 and became a permanent Judge on 14 April 2014.

Following his transfer, he took oath as a Judge of the High Court for the State of Telangana on 26 March 2024. He was later entrusted with the duties of the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court with effect from the afternoon of 21 January 2025.

Subsequently, His Lordship was transferred to the Calcutta High Court, where he assumed charge as a Judge on the forenoon of 18 July 2025 and later became the Additional Chief Justice on September 26, 2025.
