NEW DELHI: The Central government officially sanctioned the appointment of three advocates to the Gujarat High Court. This decision was confirmed by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who shared the update through his official Twitter account.

The three advocates appointed as judges are as follows:

  • Sanjeev Jayendra Thaker

  • Deeptendra Narayan Ray @ D N Ray

  • Maulik Jitendra Shelat

The process of appointing these advocates began when the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, alongside Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai, recommended these names on August 13, 2024.

The Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues, initially suggested the appointment of these advocates on December 22, 2023.

The Supreme Court Collegium highlighted an important point in its recommendation process, stating that

“the Chief Minister and the Governor of the State of Gujarat had not conveyed their views on the said recommendation.”

Despite this, the Collegium proceeded with its own evaluation to ensure that the candidates met the required standards.

The Collegium conducted a comprehensive review, focusing on the

“assessment of merit and suitability of the candidates.”

Moreover, the consultee-judges from Gujarat gave their opinions on the matter, with the Collegium noting that the consultee-judges had

“expressed positive opinion about the suitability of the candidature of the three lawyers.”

This appointment marks another significant step in strengthening the judiciary in Gujarat, bringing in experienced advocates to serve as judges in the state’s High Court.
